![]() ![]() They’re your standard American family, living a little bit beyond their means. They have two kids, a 14-year-old named Rory and a 13-year-old named Jenna. ![]() The novel is told from the point of view of the unnamed husband, a country club tennis pro, who is married to the beautiful Millicent, a real estate agent. But now we have My Lovely Wife, which heralds the arrival of a writer who deserves to be a superstar, the previously unpublished but terrifically talented Samantha Downing. The last psychological thriller to have that effect on me was Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, which for the longest time seemed to be the standard bearer for truly probing, truly messed-up mysteries. But to finish a book and marvel at what I’ve just read? ![]() Surprised, definitely entertained, often. Because of my deep familiarity with the genre, it’s perishing rare for me to finish a mystery and actually be shocked by what has transpired. ![]() I read a lot of mystery novels, and I have done so since long before I started reviewing here for Criminal Element. My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing is a wildly compulsive debut thriller about a couple whose 15-year marriage has finally gotten too interesting. ![]() ![]() ![]() Today Norman Davies resides in Oxford where he lives and writes. Without a statement from Alicia, no one knows what drove her to blast her husband in the face. Alcestis is named for the heroine of a Greek myth who willingly sacrificed herself for her husband. However, her last painting, post-murder, is a self-portrait which she names Alcestis. Once she has been arrested for the killing, she never speaks another word. She writes lovingly about her husband and her difficulties in working on paintings for an upcoming exhibit. It’s a brilliant device providing insight into the woman’s mind. The book begins with an entry from Alicia’s diary and some of the story is told this way. I had to know what drove a seemingly sweet woman to viciously kill the man she loved. Not only does she shoot him, she shoots him in the face five times. On the surface, everything seems perfect, until Alicia murders Gabriel. Some of the prices for individual tickets would also buy you a studio apartment in the city. It was hard to know what to do when I went to the box office. It was Puccini’s La Boheme, and it starred Montserrat Caballé. Having calmed him down and got a dictionary, I realized that he had seen a production at the Liceu that was special, and he believed that I, as a matter of urgency, should see it too. He was saying something that clearly would require quick action on my part. At first, I thought a fire had broken out or the police had, once more, attacked the people. Two days ago, he was waiting for me in the corridor.
